How Renovating Your Garage Can Improved Your Home’s Resale Value

It’s important that you keep your home’s resale value as high as possible. While real estate appreciation will help in some respects, you do need to take action yourself. One way that you can do that is to improve the look of your garage’s exterior and interior.

Why the Garage?

It’s no secret that curb appeal (the appearance of your home’s exterior) is one of the single largest factors in whether your home sells or not. Peeling paint, cracked siding, sagging windows – these are all things that will turn buyers off. The same thing goes for your garage door, which makes a lot of sense since it makes up 25 to 45% of your home’s façade.

When a potential buyer pulls up to your home, chances are good that the garage door is the first thing they see. If it’s rundown and shabby, you can expect them to go elsewhere. Here are a few ideas to help you increase your home’s resale value by renovating your garage.

  1. Remodel It – If your garage is unfinished, you can add a lot of value without much effort just by putting up some sheetrock and painting it. Don’t neglect to insulate the garage, too. If the interior is looking a little rough, with peeling paint coming off the floor, just repainting it can add a lot to the home’s value. Note that when it comes to paint, lighter colors should be the rule.
  2. Exterior and Interior Paint – Repainting the exterior of the garage, your garage door, and the interior of the garage can take very little time and offer a lot of value.
  3. Declutter the Garage – Another important tip is to get as much of your stuff out as possible. Go through your boxes and other items. Anything you don’t need can be donated, or trashed. The rest can be stored elsewhere, like in a corner of the basement, or up in the attic.
  4. Garage Door Maintenance – If your garage door is not working properly, it will detract a lot from the value of the home. Make sure that the door is in good working order. A professional tune-up can help a lot.
  5. Replace the Door – Often, the garage door is ignored in favor of other areas of the home. This is a mistake. If your garage door is looking a bit worse for the wear, or is damaged, have it professionally replaced. Not only will a new garage door add a lot of curb appeal to your home, but modern garage doors are actually pretty affordable and will make a good impression on potential buyers.
