Here’s Some Inspiration for Choosing a Contemporary Garage Door

Contempory Garage

Contemporary architecture is very popular in the residential real estate market. These modern homes, built in the 1950s and after, have distinct characteristics. Garage door manufacturers like Garaga, have designed products that fit seamlessly with this kind of architecture style.

In fact, seven of the 24 different models made by Garaga fit into the “contemporary” design space. If this sounds like something you might want on your home, read on…

Defining “contemporary” styles

A few clues will help you decide if your home is “contemporary.” First of all, contemporary homes have large openings for windows and for rear doors (such as sliding patio doors). They often have flat roofs or roofing with four same-sized slopes. Darker colors are quite common in modern homes, and the siding is often a mixture of wood, stone or brick. The exterior lines and angles are clean and usually very straight.

The “father” of this style of architecture is Frank Lloyd Wright. The famous architect is responsible for many, many buildings, but when it comes to residential homes, he is best known for his Usonian design. This design served as the inspiration for the “ranch” style popularized in the 1950s.

A closer look at Garaga’s contemporary garage door styles

Contemporary residential architecture is defined by clean, sharp lines. Garaga has garage doors that use this same modern style. Here are the contemporary design options that they offer:

  • The VOG: with a deep, v‑shaped, horizontal groove, 40″ x 1 ¼” (102 x 3 cm) long on each section, giving you a subtle, but sleek, style.
  • The MODERNO: this door has a thin 3⁄16″ (5 mm), continuous line running the full width of the door. The Moderno comes in two configurations: the 2‑Bead with each section having a line at the top and bottom, and the Multi, with equally spaced lines every 4 or so inches.
  • The GROOVED: this model has a continuous horizontal line, this time 1″‑high (25 mm) over the full width of the door. The number of grooves may be either 4 or 5 depending on the height of the door sections.
  • The FLUSH model: for a truly streamlined look, the FLUSH has no embossed lines or grooves, just is a light woodgrain finish to give the impression of a wooden carriage house door from the 1950s.

Contemporary window additions are available

In addition to the aforementioned stylistic characteristics, contemporary homes often have large windows to let in natural light. Why not use the same idea on your garage? Garaga has large windows, such as 40″ X 13″ (102 X 32 cm).These can be placed around the door, based on your design plans.

Options include clear glass, printed designs, stained glass, frosted glass, soft satin glass, textured windows or glass with horizontal lines.

What about an all glass door?

Garaga’s California door has fully-glass sections. Its frame is made of light but strong extruded aluminum, so you won’t have to worry about its sturdiness. What about glass types for this kind of door? Garaga offers everything from clear, satin, and glue chip to fluted polycarbonate and tinted glass in colors ranging from blue and green to gray and bronze.
