How to Coordinate the Colours on the Exterior of Your Home

How to Coordinate the Colours on the Exterior of Your Home

Something that all homeowners want, whether they are building their first home or refurbishing their existing home, is a house that looks as beautiful as they’ve always imagined. There is nothing better than a home that looks and feels welcoming and cozy, and one of the best ways to achieve that goal is to choose the perfect exterior house colours.

Proper lubrication of the springs will also eliminate the clicking that comes from the friction between the steel coils.

Basic Guidelines

There are three elements that need to be coordinated to create a cohesive exterior look:

  • The material on the exterior of your house. This may be vinyl siding, stone, brick, stucco, or many other materials. There is often a mixture of materials. The exterior covering represents a major surface area of the house.
  • The colour of your window trim, entry doors, and garage doors.
  • All of the decorative and architectural elements, such as shutters, soffits, railings, cornices, and other components.

Manufacturers today offer more colour options for all of these elements than ever before. This may make it easier, or harder! The colour or colours you choose for the exterior covering will influence the colours of the other components, as well as the material. Keep in mind the amount of maintenance time you have to spend when choosing materials, because some take more cleaning or upkeep than others.

Architectural Style Matters

All homes are built in a specific architectural style, and that can influence the colours you may choose. If you live in a country style cottage, you will likely have a wider selection with brighter hues than a family with a more classic style home, like a Colonial. Colours for that house may be more limited as brick is often used in the exterior.

You also need to consider your landscaping, such as trees, shrubs and flowers. The colours, and how many of each plant you have, will impact the colours you choose for your home’s exterior, as well as the orientation of house in relation to the sun, which can change the look of certain colours.

Another consideration should be the architecture your neighbors’ houses and that of your neighborhood. It is always a good idea to check if your town imposes certain limitations on the choice of materials, details, or styles that can be used.

The Big Picture

Based on the architectural style of your house, what you’ve chosen for materials, the position of your home, and what kinds of details you have to work with, contrasting the various elements to achieve an harmonious style is the key to creating a cohesive big picture.

If you don’t want to repaint the exterior of your house, limit yourself to two or three colours for the other details that coordinate with the main colour of your exterior material. Neutral exterior paint colours are often the best choice, because they are easy to match with the existing elements of the home.

Visit the websites of various paint companies. A portion of their site is usually devoted to exterior house colour ideas, which helps with visualizing exterior paint colour combinations and how these different colours harmonize.

Don’t Forget Your Front Door and Your Garage Door!

These are two important elements that should not be overlooked. As your main entrances, they represent the first personal impression that a guest will make about your home. Once again, based on the dominate colour of your home’s exterior, there is a wide spectrum of colours for your front door. Depending on your tastes and style, it can be very striking or very classic. Using a contrasting colour for your front door, compared to your home, is a great way to create a memorable look.

When it comes to the garage door, keep the location and size in mind. If the garage door is placed on the front, and it’s a double door that is as much as 16 feet wide, pick a pale, neutral colour to make your home seem larger.

If you opt for a dark colour for contrast, consider adding decorative elements around the garage door, such as hanging plants or decorative lights, to offset the darkness.

When the possibility of adding a row of windows to your garage door exists, make sure they coordinate with your front door. A great way of visualizing this is by using Garaga’s Design Centre and get a free quote.
